Maria Lassnig
Born: 1919 in Krappfeld, Austria
Lives: Vienna, died 2014
She was influenced in the early by Surrealism and the gestural expressionism of informal. Soon began to create her signature "body awareness" images exploring sensations of physical and psychological pain and pleasure in large, colorful, quasi-abstract paintings as well as small, delicate drawings of bizarrely distorted or deformed bodies. Many are introspective self- portraits, sometimes incorporating animals to represent a primal state of existence. She lived in Paris in 1951 and again from 1961 to 1968. Then she lived in New York from 1968 to 1980 and from 1981 in Vienna.
